More Power Breaks Ground For Underground Cabling In Calle Real

Calle Real in Iloilo City will bid farewell to the tangled mess of overhead spaghetti wires with the efforts of More Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) as they commence an Underground Distribution System (UDS) in the city.

On Tuesday, May 30, at Sunburst Park, J.M. Basa Street, Iloilo City, MORE Power and the Iloilo City Government joined hands to commemorate the start of an important endeavor – the groundbreaking ceremony which marked the beginning of the underground cabling project for power and other essential utilities along Calle Real.

This collaborative effort demonstrates MORE Power’s dedication to assisting the city in its development projects and safeguarding its cultural and historical significance.

“This part and parcel of MORE Power’s commitment to the city. We are very supportive of the projects of the city especially in the preservation of its cultural and heritage value,” said MORE Power President Roel Z. Castro.

The UDS project consists of three key stages. The first phase involves Civil works, which is regarded as the most demanding aspect of project implementation. The second phase centers on Electrical works, encompassing tasks such as cable installation and termination. Finally, Phase 3 concludes with the elimination of current overhead lines and structures.

“It is after the completion of Phase 3 that the true beauty and effectiveness of the UDS project will be fully realized,” said Engr. Bailey Del Castillo, MORE Power Vice President for Network Development and Operations.

The project is divided into three distinct parts, starting with Section 1, which begins at the intersection of Arroyo and J.M. Basa Streets. Sections 2 and 3 continue from there, stretching all the way to Plaza Libertad and ending at the corner of Zamora Street. This extensive undertaking covers a total length of nearly one kilometer.

To execute this project, MORE Power has enlisted the expertise of Fibernet Konstrukt Corp (FKC), a renowned company specializing in advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling Construction for underground duct and cable installations. The project, with a budget of ₱96.4 million, is expected to be completed within a timeframe of 240 days.

“By moving our power lines underground, we are embracing a new era of progress and addressing the challenges that come with urban development. This project aligns with our commitment to ensuring a secure environment for all. Furthermore, this will maximize the beauty of our ‘jewels’, the heritage structures in Calle Real,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas.

The resilience of the city’s infrastructure will be greatly improved, providing uninterrupted power to homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools that will foster economic growth, attract new investments, and create a favorable environment for businesses to thrive, he added.
