Alaska Nutrition Advocate champions campaign towards “Tamang Tangkad and Bigat”

PANDAN, ANTIQUE – According to the 2015 National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Philippines (FNRI), 1 out of every 3 children in the Philippines aged 5 to 10 is affected by stunted growth or is underweight.

Stunted growth is defined as lack of height for a child’s age. On the other hand, the state of being underweight means a child lacks the proper weight for his or her age. Both these conditions are due to poor nutrition and is prevalent in a third world country such as the Philippines. Stunted growth as well as being underweight are problems that should not be ignored.  If not addressed early, both conditions may lead to lost productivity and nutrition-related diseases later in life.  However, both problems can be addressed with proper nutrition during the developmental stages of a child’s life.

Fully aware of these facts, Alaska Milk Corporation, which is dedicated to providing proper and affordable nutrition to Filipinos for over four decades, champions a school milk program that promotes the importance of proper nutrition all throughout a child’s development years in order to reach the right height and weight for their age.

Taking the lead in this campaign is Alaska’s new Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink which is a good source of vitamin D, high in calcium and iron and packed with protein. Milk has always been essential for growing children to have enough and consistent nutrient intake to ensure maximum growth potential. That is why Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink, combined with proper nutrition and an active lifestyle, will help children reach the tamang tangkad at bigat (right height and weight) for their age.

After successful legs in Manila, Davao and Cebu, the Batang Alaska School Milk Program now goes to Antique, the home province of Alaska Milk’s Nutrition Advocate Sen. Loren Legarda, who authored many pieces of legislation aimed at improving the lives of Filipinos and promoting inclusive, sustainable and resilient development.

The Batang Alaska School Milk Program-Antique was formally launched in Pandan Elementary School in Pandan, Antique. During the event, kids, teachers and parents were given a short but educational talk about the importance of nutrition and of regularly drinking milk by Inday Loren, as how the esteemed senator is called in her hometown. Alaska also provided everyone with samples of the Alaska Fortified Milk Drink, which when combined with a balance diet, is able to help children obtain their age’s proper height and weight.

Given the importance of milk in providing proper nutrition, Sen. Legarda also graced the formal launch of the Antique Dairy Development Program at the Liberman Gymnasium in Pandan, Antique. The launch coincided with the delivery of 24 heads of pregnant dairy heifers from Primas DMF that will increase milk production in the province of Antique. As of September 2018, dairy farmers in this province have produced 18,579 liters of milk since January 18, 2018. Sen. Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, had allotted the funding for the purchase of Breeding Stock under the budget of the National Dairy Authority.

Reasons to be in Mararison Island with P900 Budget

Mararison Malalison Island Culasi Antique

Traveling was only a dream for a simple soul like mine. I desire to just discover the beauty of my homeland until it becomes an inspiration. Discovering nearby sceneries is an experience I want to share with significant people. Lately, with a nine hundred peso (P900) budget, I enjoyed the fusion experience of sea and mountain of Mararison Island in Antique, Philippines. Truly, apt for the province’s entitlement of “where the mountain meets the sea“. These are my reasons to be in Mararison Island.
