Master The Art of Public Speaking with Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog

You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart. – John Ford

Everyone can speak (except for differently abled pips). Everyone has something to speak about. But not all can get the message across as effective and clear as it should be. #StruggleIsReal

As an influencer, writing your thoughts effectively has its pack of scores. But speaking them to a live audience is a sure different story. Many of us fail including me in representing our thoughts and ideas in a public speech. Speaking in public is more than just presenting entertaining visuals. It is sharing one’s heart and mind passionately to people.

March 21st this year marked the first training for the professional growth of Dlinkers and Unlideals Team on Digital Marketing Training 101. The team is honored to be mentored by a 13-year GMA news anchorwoman and Ratsada Executive Producer, Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog.

Here are some key points in her discussion.

Public Speaking is the process or act of giving a performance focused around an individual’s direct speech to a live audience. It includes the following goals:

  • making a connection.
  • making a lasting impact.
  • affecting another person.
  • expressing yourself.
  • being heard.
  • making a difference.
  • taking a risk.

She also described the three areas to improve when speaking in public. These are your self-confidence, attitude, and choice of words.

The lecture was really a transparent reflection on her learnings in the industry she is in.

Self-confidence is a must. Although, she pointed out the difference between self-confidence and arrogance.  It is knowing and believing in the ideas and values you can share with the listeners.

When asked if she still gets nervous when talking in public after all the years in the industry or mass reporting, she answered “yes”. She even pondered upon this thought. But in the end, she realized being nervous and having butterflies in the stomach during a public speech is God’s way of keeping her feet on the ground.

Honesty bears so much value. Speaking in public must consider honesty especially when asked certain questions about the topic. She advised that whenever you cannot answer a question, be honest to the audience and instead give them an assurance that you will look into it to give an answer or explanation the next time it will be asked. Never pretend to know an idea very well when actually you don’t because people will notice it.

Passion for the topic is a coherent adhesive between you and the audience. You must be passionate to what you speak about. It will drive your audience to not only listen to your voice but importantly to your heart. The weight of being passionate is the key to impact lives.

“The perfect blend of truth, right words, and passionate sincerity gives a public speech and marketing more impact.” – Nile on Weekends

She ended the lecture by citing Prophet Samuel as an effective public speaker. The sincerity and authority projected in the person of Prophet Samuel are worth emulating. After all, it was a fun-filled learning experience with her. Looking forward to attending more training under her mentorship in the future.
